Protect American Jobs - Fight Stealth Foreign Worker Increase

FAIR has learned that cheap labor proponents plan to sneak language into "must-pass" appropriations legislation to vastly expand the H-1B "high tech" and H-2B "unskilled" guest worker programs during next week's lame duck session of Congress.

Please help us fight this by urging your legislators to oppose any and all attempts to expand these foreign guest worker programs.

Specifically, they may attempt to exempt foreign graduates of U.S. institutions with Masters and Doctoral degrees as well as some foreign doctors from the 65,000/year H-1B cap. These exemptions, in addition to the existing ones for foreigners coming to work for U.S. universities, research centers or government agencies, would make a mockery of the annual limit, especially at a time when high-tech workers have higher than ever unemployment levels. Some estimate this exemption could result in 30,000 to 40,000 more visas per year, which is a staggering level and a major threat to high tech American workers.

Details on how they plan to expand the H-2B "unskilled" guest worker program are less clear, but the threat is very real. These visas provide greedy employers with seasonal workers being paid considerably less than their American counterparts. These foreign workers are often hired to fill jobs also sought after by American teens, including hotel resort work and other summer vacation related employment. The current cap on H-2B visas is set at 66,000/year.

In 2003, the caps on both of these programs were reached within no time, which is a clear sign that employers are abusing these programs to cut costs at the expense of American wages and working conditions.

With the jobless recovery, skyrocketing unemployment rates, and the highest jobless rate among high tech workers in 30 years, efforts to bring in more foreign workers are clearly aimed at appeasing greedy employers. Too many hard working Americans are unemployed and more will face the same fate if this legislation is passed.

TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE…The lame duck session is expected to be fast and furious, with hopes of adjourning as early as the end of next week. Some lawmakers believe they can sneak these H-1B and H-2B provisions by while no one is looking. If we can hold this off next week, lawmakers will be forced to debate these issues out in the open. American jobs are on the line. Please help fight this.

Talking Points:
As long as Congress allows employers to look overseas to fill jobs, it's always going to be a race to the bottom for wages and working conditions in this country.

It's outrageous to expand guest worker programs when general unemployment is high and unemployment among high-tech American workers is at a 30 year high.

In 2003, caps on the H-1B and H-2B visa programs were reached within no time, which is a clear sign that employers are abusing these programs to cut costs at the expense of American wages and working conditions.

These guest worker programs need to be curbed or eliminated, not made more generous.

Islamist Websites and their Hosts

Part II: Clerics
By Marie-Hélène Boccara & Alex Greenberg*

This is the second part(1) in a series of reports on Islamist websites, focusing on those with Internet Service Providers (ISP's) in the West.(2) For the benefit of the reader and to facilitate understanding of what the websites contain, we have added an example from the contents of each website. It should be noted that a large number of Islamist websites are often hacked or shut down, but reappear on other servers, sometimes under new domain names, sometimes they just disappear. All details are valid as of publication date.

Excerpt from the website (audio recording of Friday sermon, undated):
"... [Allah,] the Almighty and Great! When he wanted to help our religion [to win] and in order to render His word supreme and to humiliate his enemies, he brought out these heroes, these men, the Jihad fighters who seek death as others seek life and seek Allah's promise in the Koran and sacrifice their property, their blood, and their lives as a sign of the sincerity of their faith. When Allah wanted [to bring the downfall of] the country of heresy [i.e. the U.S.] and humiliate it and grind its nose into the ground, he brought out Osama [bin Laden]."(4)

Excerpt from the website (Friday sermon, August 21, 2004):
"I say: Cutting off heads is a part of our religion. Indeed, by God, slaughtering Allah's enemies is part of our religion. It should be done in accordance with the interests of the Islamic nation...

"Cutting off heads and slaughtering Allah's enemies is part of this religion, as is written in the biography of the leader of the Jihad fighters [i.e. the Prophet Muhammad]...

"Slaughtering is the appropriate message and the effective remedy for those who understand only the language of blood and the logic of force, those who pounded the villages in Afghanistan with B-82 planes and with Tomahawk missiles and murdered old people, women and children by the thousands...

"When a Jihad fighter kills some barbaric infidel, the whole world is in turmoil, and they [the infidels] call the Jihad fighters terrorists and murderers.

"The defeatists, in acquiescence to them [i.e. the infidels], announce that cutting off heads is not in accordance with Islam and that these Jihad fighters have no mercy in their hearts. No, by God, this is mercy ... because those [infidels] can only understand the language of slaughtering, murder and blood.

"May your right hand be blessed, my brother Abu Mus'ab Al-Zarqawi!

"May your right hand be blessed, my brother Abu Hajar, 'Abd Al-'Aziz Al-Muqrin!...

"Acting in accordance with the Prophet Mohammad's mercy, we slaughter the criminals and aggressors and hold sacred the lives of Muslims and help the oppressed."(6)

Excerpt from the website (book titled 'Exposition about the Heresy of Those who Aid the Americans'):
"You already know that the Crusading infidel attack - led by the enemies of Allah, the Americans and their allies from among the other infidels and hypocrites - is directed against Islam and the Muslims. Therefore, [you should] know that any aid to them in their war - whether in body, in weapons, in tongue, in heart, by [means of the] pen, money, or in opinion, or anything else - is heresy and apostasy."(7)

Excerpt from (treatise 'Ruling Regarding the Use of Weapons of Mass Destruction' [Against the Infidels]):
"If a bomb was dropped on them [i.e. the Americans] that would annihilate 10 million and burn their lands to the same extent that they burned the Muslim lands - this is permissible, with no need to mention any other proof. Yet if we want to annihilate a greater number, we need further evidence...

"Texts that prove it is possible to carry out a surprise nighttime attack on the polytheists even if their offspring will be harmed by it...

"On this matter, Hamed wrote: 'Although it is proven that the Prophet forbade the killing of women and children, if you collect these hadiths you will find that this is a prohibition against the premeditated killing of them. But if their being killed is the result of a surprise attack and a raid, and an inability to distinguish among them [i.e. the enemy under attack] then there is nothing wrong with it, and the Jihad is not called off because of the presence of the women and children of the infidels'..."(9)

Excerpt from the website (article published July 6, 2004 'Dubious Issues that Arise with Regard to Pacts and Assurance of Protection'):
"One must not confuse right and wrong. America should be rightly defined as a tyrannical state that is waging war against Islam and the Muslims. It is in fact involved in a direct and ongoing war against the Muslims in more than one Muslim country. Therefore, there can be no contract or agreement of safe passage [that would guarantee the life of American citizens] between it [i.e., America] and those whom it fights. It is obligatory to wage Jihad and fight [America]...

"It is, however, wrong to assume that each and every individual of the 280 million American people cannot enjoy the rights of safe passage or a contract if he is granted such a contract by an individual Muslim or by some Muslims, even though his government is at war with Islam and the Muslims...

"[As for the question] whether the American troops in the Gulf states are occupiers or ahl dhimma [i.e., a protected non-Muslim minority]...

"The American troops in the Gulf states are not ahl dhimma ... they are invaders and occupiers. No perceptive rational person would doubt this."(10)

Excerpt from the website (fatwa concerning current Jihad regulations, taken from lecture titled "The Duty of Muslims for the Grace of Allah"):
"Once we realize [all that is required by] the faith of Islam and monotheism, once we propagate the message of Allah and overcome our evil inclinations, then we shall vanquish our enemies, Allah willing. It is our duty to carry out these two kinds of Jihad in every Muslim country...

"We should begin by propagating the message of Allah and end by fighting the infidels and conquering countries. All of this is called Jihad of Da'wa [the propagation of Islam]. As for defensive Jihad [which is a personal obligation for every Muslim] - most Islamic lands are now under occupation [by infidels], be they Russian, Shi'ite, Baathist, socialist or democratic - all of which are doctrines of unbelief."(11)

Excerpt from the website (article: "Who are You?"):
"The explosions that occur and which cause hundreds and dozens of Muslims to lose their lives are forbidden according to Allah's law... We ask them [those who kill Muslims]: Who are you? Do you consider yourselves Jihad fighters? Against whom are you waging Jihad? Are you waging Jihad against the Jews on the blessed land, against whom every Muslim knows there is an obligation to wage Jihad? Are you waging Jihad against the aggressive Crusaders, who helped the Jews to kill the leaders of Jihad and others in Palestine and who occupied Muslim countries and spread corruption in Afghanistan and Iraq? They fight the Islamic da'wa [the propagation of Islam] and those who propagate [Islam], and they fight the Islamic relief organizations on every inch of the land, and prepare to occupy other Muslim countries, Arab and non-Arab...

"If you had carried out these attacks in those lands against the aggressors and conquerors, being devoted to Allah and defending the necessities of life of the Islamic Nation, then the fallen among you would have entered Paradise and the fallen among your enemies [would have entered] hell..."( 12)

Excerpt from the website (fatwa issued on April 26, 2001, concerning the nature of martyrdom operations):
"These operations of seeking martyrdom are in accordance with the shari'a [Islamic law] and they fall under the definition of Jihad, if they are carried out with sincere intention. This is one of the most successful and effective means of Jihad against the enemies of this religion because it causes much damage and many casualties, both dead and wounded, and because it spreads terror and fear and dread among them, and because it emboldens the Muslims against them and strengthens the hearts of the Muslims and breaks the hearts of the enemies and brings much slaughtering upon them...

"In sum, all the above shows that Jihad fighters can sacrifice themselves in operations of martyrdom for the purpose of Jihad and to cause damage to [the enemy] ... because there are such great benefits in Jihad, many [prohibited] things which are not [generally] forgiven, such as lying and deceiving, are forgiven for the sake of Jihad. Thus, it is permitted in Jihad to kill those who [It is generally prohibited to kill, such as the above-mentioned Muslims used as human shields by the enemies, and the women and children of the infidels]. That is the general rule in the questions of Jihad, and therefore the question of martyrdom operations falls under this category."(13)

They fall under the definition of legitimate terrorization... Excerpt from the website (fatwa #751, issued on May 26, 2003, "Waging Jihad in Iraq"):
"There is no doubt that if a Muslim land is under attack, Jihad becomes a personal duty incumbent upon all of its inhabitants and upon all of its neighbours until aggression is defeated. But in our time, because the Islamic Nation is divided into many countries - each with its own government and its internationally recognized borders and specific laws and treaties - this Islamic shari'a duty is [applied] on two levels. The first is the Islamic governments. The participation in Jihad against the aggressive U.S. forces and assistance to the Muslim people of Iraq is considered a personal duty of each of the [Islamic governments]. It is true that this obligation depends upon the [government's] ability, like any other shari'a obligation, but this condition must not be used as a pretext to avoid giving any kind of assistance, let alone [a pretext] to help the aggressive forces. This is strictly forbidden. This is [the kind of] association with infidels that Allah forbade. The second [level] is [that of] the individual Muslims worldwide and the Jihad in Iraq, meaning participation in the fight against the aggressive armies. This is not considered to be a personal duty [required] of them, but it is desirable for those who are capable of it. Whoever carries out [that duty] will receive the reward of a Jihad fighter, God willing, and whoever is killed from among them is a martyr [shahid], God willing."(16)

A civil war: I don't think so

Now all the tin-foil hat wearing academics come out with their twisted theories. Guess what whiners--the great chasm in America is a media creation. George Bush won. John Kerry lost. We are still all Americans and death squads haven't come around to haul off the losers. What I wonder is what is an ART CRITIC at Columbia of all places doing commenting on chasm of cultures? The The Maryland Moderate has this post ........

Matthew Continetti of the Daily Standard wonders that the left has decided that in the wake of Bush's victory, America is on the brink of civil war. Are they nuts? Why yes, they are nuts. Seems the DEMs are all bent out of shape on this. What if they gave a civil war and nobody came? At least one side, anyway.//JW sends

"Not since the Civil War," Columbia University professor and noted art critic Simon Schama wrote in the Manchester Guardian on Sunday, "has the fault line between [America's] two halves been so glaringly clear, nor the chasm between its two cultures so starkly unbridgeable."

Princeton University history professor Sean Wilentz agrees. He told Dean Murphy in Sunday's New York Times that there are only "two instances in history" when the American electorate has been so divided. "They are kind of scary examples," Wilentz said. "One is 1860, and we know what happened after that one . . ." (Wilentz's second example was the 1896 election, which did not, in case you were wondering, result in secession.)

It's not just noted liberal academics who believe we're about to reenact the Civil War. It's newspaper writers and television pundits. It's Hollywood actors, like Mandy Patinkin: "We were driving around early this morning and saying to each other in the car, I always wondered what it was like, the mentality during the Civil War in America," Patinkin told CTV this week. "Now I know. It's just completely divided."

Dozens more Kerry supporters flock to Florida therapists

I don't know whether this is insane because it is so pathetic or pathetic because it so insane

American Health Association reacts with free ‘post-election selection trauma’ counseling

by Sean Salai Boca Raton News

More shocked John Kerry supporters on Wednesday sought psychological help with “post-election selection trauma” in South Florida, prompting the American Health Association to officially release symptoms of the disorder and open its doors for free counseling.

“When someone commits suicide in New York and Kerry’s loss is even slightly connected, it’s serious,” Rob Gordon, executive director of the AHA, told the Boca Raton News. “There’s a lot of older Democrats here and they outnumber Republicans and you don’t want an epidemic of suicides with the elderly. So our counseling center is now open free to those with post-election selection depression, PEST, who need to exorcise their demons.”

According to Gordon, the Boca-based AHA has formally defined the symptoms of PEST and will offer the free sessions through the end of the year. He said approximately 30 people had contacted AHA for psychological counseling since Kerry conceded the presidential race to President Bush on Nov. 3.

Gordon said symptoms of the trauma are similar to post-traumatic stress disorder and include loss of appetite, sleeplessness, nightmares and pervasive moodiness.

The AHA’s actions come after the Boca Raton News reported Tuesday that Palm Beach County psychotherapist Douglas Schooler has already treated 15 Kerry supporters using intense hypnotherapy. Schooler, contacted Wednesday, said four more people had already set up appointments for the onetime therapy session since the article was picked up internationally and cited on Rush Limbaugh’s radio show.

“The problem is out there and it’s not going to go away anytime soon,” Schooler said. “Conservatives are calling me to say these people are weak-kneed kooks, but they’re not acknowledging that this is a normal psychological response to a severe and disillusioning situation. Any suggestion that this is not a serious problem arises from a political agenda. The Republicans don’t want this talked about.”

Nancy M. Tabet, a mental health counselor with a small practice in Delray Beach, said she had helped about five clients deal with the post-election trauma in their therapy sessions.

“It’s interesting to me that people in Palm Beach County, because they vote for Kerry and thoroughly expected him to win, are in somewhat of a disbelief stage,” Tabet said. “We talk it out in our sessions and I help them realize there are people who share their viewpoint and who are there for them throughout this ordeal.”

Asked when the Kerry-related trauma would end, Tabet said, “I think the jury’s still out on that one. I think it depends on the swing of the politics.”

Elizabeth Foxman, a cognitive therapist in Delray, took issue with the AHA’s decision to label the Kerry-related stress as a new sort of trauma.

“I don’t disagree with their diagnosis, but I wouldn’t use the word trauma,” Foxman said. “That’s a loaded term. I would say there’s more sadness and anxiety than trauma. My own patients have been stressed, but only one or two have mentioned the election as a topic in therapy.”

Gordon, the AHA psychotherapist, said his agency was referring his 30 callers — most of them men — to other support groups prior to Wednesday. He said the post-election trauma will require three to four support group sessions at his agency’s counseling center, but added that he thinks the problem will fade as the troubled Kerry supporters adjust to reality.

“The support group structure means you have to bring these people together for several sessions,” Gordon said. “But every day is a new day. John Ashcroft’s resignation is going to help because Democrats certainly felt the cause of their stress was bigger than President Bush. If Condoleeza Rice and a few others resign, that will help cure their animosity as well.”

Gordon said he had received a flood of phone calls from Republicans since Limbaugh, the conservative radio talk show host who lives in South Florida, read his name on the air Tuesday.

“It’s a shame that so many Republicans are calling and saying, ‘Why can’t these people handle reality?’ Some can’t. And what is with these right-wing radio warlords who think they need to bask in the misery of others? Rush Limbaugh, of all people, should be compassionate because he lives right here in Palm Beach County. I’m ashamed that he’s picked up this Boca News story to rub it in Democrats’ faces.”

Gordon added, “Post-election selection trauma affects many people and they have a right to be taken seriously and to seek counseling. This is a real need and we’re a charity. This is not a matter of Republicans and Democrats.”

Bad News for Democrats :Hollywood activists vow to keep it up.

Here's a funny story from the WSJ--

In the wake of the unexpectedly emphatic Bush victory, Democrats got bad news from Hollywood. Instead of announcing plans to immigrate to France or Canada, the leading entertainment industry activists solemnly pledged to intensify their already impassioned commitment to partisan politics--thereby greatly complicating Democrats' efforts to shed their elitist image and reconnect with the American mainstream.

Consider the example of John Cameron Mitchell, flamboyant creator of the critically acclaimed transsexual musical comedy "Hedwig and the Angry Inch." He traveled to Ohio to get out the vote for John Kerry and refused to feel discouraged by the disappointing results. "Ultimately, after a period of depression yesterday, today I feel even more energized!" he proudly told the New York Times.

Similarly, Oscar-winning actor Richard Dreyfuss saw no chance that Tinseltown campaigners would allow an inconvenient setback like a GOP victory to cool their ardor for remaking America. In an election-eve interview on my radio show, Mr. Dreyfuss noted the powerful momentum behind Mr. Kerry's candidacy and promised that in the unlikely event of a Bush triumph, the energy would continue to build, leading, inexorably, to the impeachment of the president.

Michael Moore himself, spiritual leader of pop-culture politicos, composed a pep talk to his followers under the cheery headline "17 Reasons Not to Slit Your Wrists." In addition to making predictions that President Bush would slack off in the second term ("It'll be like everyone's last month in 12th grade--you've already made it, so it's party time!"), he reminded the faithful that they had nearly achieved the impossible and shouldn't "stop on the three yard line."

Despite such confident exhortations, there's scant evidence that the unprecedented participation of scores of A-list celebrities helped Mr. Kerry march toward victory. Paul Newman surprised suburban homeowners by walking precincts in Ohio, and Sean Penn no doubt alarmed voters by going door to door in New Mexico, but both states wound up in the Republican column. Despite tireless, all-but-unanimous support for Mr. Kerry from the show-business elite (Bruce Springsteen, Leonardo DiCaprio, Barbra Streisand and the well-known political theorist Ben Affleck), Mr. Bush actually improved his electoral performance in 45 of 50 states and even narrowed his margin of defeat in California.
The relentless "Vote or Die!" jihad of P-Diddy proved no more successful than amiable enticements by Drew Barrymore in "rocking the vote" with a tidal wave of new participants at the polls: The 18-to-29 contingent represented approximately the same percentage of total participation as it did in 2000.

In fact, the celebrity campaigners who flocked to the Kerry cause presented a painful dilemma for the Massachusetts senator: With his billionaire wife, windsurfing hobby and vacation homes in Sun Valley and Nantucket, he hardly needed further association with "the beautiful people" to emphasize his distance from everyday Americans.

At a controversial July fund-raiser in Radio City Music Hall, entertainers like Whoopi Goldberg, Jessica Lange, Meryl Streep and John Leguizamo delivered bitter, often obscene tirades against the president, after which Sen. Kerry proudly declared that "every performer tonight . . . conveyed to you the heart and soul of our country." Mr. Bush promptly (and deftly) turned that comment against his opponent, noting at frequent campaign stops (and even in his acceptance speech) that Mr. Kerry thought that you can find "the heart and soul of America in Hollywood, but I know it is really found right here in (fill in the blank)."

As Election Day approached, celebrity activists had aroused enough resentment that they even turned up as sanctimonious villains in the counterterrorism spoof "Team America: World Police." Puppets representing Alec Baldwin, Susan Sarandon, Samuel L. Jackson and Matt Damon allied themselves with the puppet version of the diabolical Kim Jong Il, and suffered decapitation, evisceration and other gruesome fates on screen--while audiences reportedly roared their approval in multiplexes across the country.

Despite their popularity as entertainers, these performers maintain at best a love-hate relationship with the general public (and feed innumerable tabloids with lurid tales of their personal problems), so their endorsements of candidates mean almost nothing. Moreover, movies long ago ceased functioning as a unifying celebration of populist values and now serve a primarily youthful niche market. Even box-office blockbusters typically draw only seven million or eight million people on their opening weekends--less than half the number who listen to Rush Limbaugh in any given week.
If Democrats intend to compete for support in "fly-over country," generating fresh appeal to hardworking, religiously committed red-state voters who shop at Wal-Mart without guilt, they must escape their identification as the party of Beverly Hills dilettantes and self-righteous celebrities. This means learning to live without Hollywood money, and focusing less obsessive attention on fighting Ralph Nader (or other radical leaders) for a handful of high-profile endorsements on the marginal left.

A future standard-bearer might even strengthen his appeal if fashionable former Naderites like Ms. Sarandon, Michael Moore, Tim Robbins and Peter Coyote once again abandoned practical politics and embraced a chic, purist fringe party, leaving the Democrats to compete for the decidedly unglamorous voters who can actually elect a president of the United States.

Tell House Republican Conferees to Stand Up for Immigration Security Reform

Help get the immigration security provisions recommended by the 9/11 Commission passed. Call and urge House Republican conferees to use their strengthened post election political power to get the job done.

Tell them to hold the line on identification security, border protection and immigration enforcement provisions in their continuing negotiations over H.R. 10 and S. 2845.

Senate conferees presented their House counterparts with compromise legislation today (Nov. 8) which is said to include some immigration-related language. The details, however, have not yet been released - so there's no telling how watered down these provisions are in comparison to the House legislation.
President Bush is pressing Congress to pass a bill during the lame-duck session of Congress beginning Nov. 16, which means there is still a significant threat that in an effort to reach quick compromise the immigration provisions could be dropped or severely watered down.

Thank the Republican conferees for holding out against Senate objections so far, but be sure to tell them to insist that the Senate conferees accept the House immigration-security reforms.

Act NOW!
Call all of the Republican House conferees listed below and urge them to stand up for the immigration-security provisions and to accept nothing less from their Senate counterparts. (See sample message below.)

Check out the full list of conferees below to see if your legislators are listed. If so, send a FREE fax today reiterating the need for the immigration-security provisions. (Click here then type your zip code into the take action now box to send this fax.) Follow your faxes up with phone calls. (Find your legislators phone number here on our web site.)

Sample Message:
(*If you're a constituent, be sure to say so when calling. If you're not a constituent and they ask why you're calling, say this is a national security issue that affects you as well as their constituents.)
"My name is (insert name). I'm calling to urge the Representative to stand up for the immigration-security provisions in H.R.10 and to insist that he/she accept nothing less than legislation that includes all of these provisions. Tell Rep. (insert name) that getting the immigration provisions enacted is imperative to the safety of our nation, is in line with the 9/11 Commission recommendations, and is strongly supported by the American public."

Right Wing News: Warning to Karl Rove and Republicans

President Bush and his administration get a well-deserved warning that prospective republican candidates might want to consider over at Right Wing News
But fellas, I have a warning for you and it's one Republicans in Washington had better heed.

Conservatives are not as happy with the Party as those great numbers on November 2nd would lead you to believe. There is a lot of agitation out in "Red State America" over how George Bush's first term went that was set aside because the idea of having an indecisive and dovish liberal as Commander-in-Chief during a time of war was too horrible to contemplate.

Yes, most conservatives appreciate the President's strong and principled stand on national security, pushing for a missile defense system, his tax cuts, his fight for tort reform, working to strengthen Social Security, his willingness to stand up for marriage with a Constitutional Amendment, his fight against abortion, and his promise to appoint conservative Supreme Court Justices.

But if you Republicans in Washington want to keep the base happy through 2006, three things are going to have to change.

1) You're going to have to get spending under control.
2) You need to stop increasing the size of government.
3) You better get a handle on illegal immigration

Newsweek Article on Elections is A Must-Read

MSNBC has Newsweeks article on the campaign running--it is a must-read for political junkies--here's an excerpt from "Down to the wire"

"Rove was determined to fight back, even to strike pre-emptively. "They hired 10,000 lawyers. So we hired 10,000 lawyers," he said. Rove had already ordered up legal challenges to allegedly fraudulent Democratic voter-registration efforts in states from Ohio to Nevada. ("We found Freddy Krueger [from the movie "Nightmare on Elm Street"] registered 10 times in Nevada," said an aide to Rove.) The Democrats hired poll watchers and drivers to get their people to the polling place. Traditionally, the Democrats could count on labor unions to organize the most effective get-out-the-vote operations. The Republicans, by custom, relied largely on volunteers, housewives and grandmothers, small businessmen and retirees, who worked for nothing more than an "attawaytogo" message from Rove's BlackBerry and the satisfaction of playing a small part in his vast crusade to re-elect the president."

Peter Beinart--What Went Wrong

Peter Beinart is a very good writer and editor at the New Republic--While at the opposite end of my political spectrum--he's is reasoned in his beliefs--there are implications for republicans in his suggestions

by Peter Beinart. (The New Republic)

The other side may be euphoric, but the intensity of their happiness can't match the intensity of our despair. Honest conservatives, even those who admire President Bush, know he didn't earn a second term. They know he staked his presidency on a catastrophe, and that, by all rights, Iraq should be his political epitaph. Their victory, while sweet, can't be fully enjoyed because it isn't fully deserved.

Our despair, on the other hand, is undiluted. American liberalism is going into a deep internal exile. This will be, at least with regard to our public institutions, Tom DeLay's America -- craven toward the economically powerful and vicious toward the economically weak, contemptuous of open debate and thuggish toward an increasingly embittered world. It would be comforting to believe the pendulum will naturally swing back. But, as my colleague Jonathan Chait has argued, the Bush administration and its allies have gone to great lengths to insulate themselves from democratic pressure, to make decisions in secret, and thus to prevent public opinion from forcing their hand. Already, the president is claiming a mandate for partial Social Security privatization and regressive changes in the tax code -- even though he rarely campaigned on these issues and there is no evidence the American public voted for them. The pendulum will not inevitably swing back. It will have to be moved back by a political opposition that knows what it believes and knows how to fight for it.

For Democrats, the moment presents two dangerous, and opposing, temptations. The first, which will appeal to the party's practical wing, is to pander furiously to the culturally conservative voters who gave Bush his margin of victory. Of course, Democrats should show respect for the traditionally religious. In retrospect, the party should have been more wary of the New England political style, with its awkwardness about public declarations of faith. (Michael Dukakis should have been experience enough.) One of the great challenges in the coming years for the Democratic Party -- a party that has just lost five senate seats in the South -- will be to nurture a new generation of Southern Democratic politicians, since it is Southerners who most often possess an ease with overt faith that helps them connect to more religious voters, black and white.

But cultural sensitivity is one thing; principle is another. In their attempts to win rural voters, Democrats have already essentially abandoned gun control. That doesn't keep me up at night. But gay marriage is different. The fact that it is widely unpopular cannot obscure the fact that it is morally momentous and morally right. Liberals once lost elections for supporting civil rights as well and now look back on those losses as badges of honor. Eventually, since young people are far more tolerant of homosexuality than their parents, gay marriage will stop hurting Democrats at the polls. Until then, the party should try to win elections on other issues -- and look forward to the day when conservatives apologize for trying to deny yet another group of Americans their full human rights.

The second, opposite, danger is that, instead of pandering to culturally conservative voters, Democrats -- particularly upscale liberal Democrats -- will revile them. This week's devastating loss may produce a spasm of liberal anti-Americanism akin to the conservative anti-Americanism that followed the failure to impeach Bill Clinton. Little could be worse for the Democratic Party than a surge of cultural elitism, something that has hurt it immeasurably over the years. It must be resisted ferociously.

Both of these impulses -- to surrender to red-state values and to mock them -- are diversions from the real work ahead. The path back to Democratic victory does not lie in cultural issues -- it never has, and the best that can be hoped for in that arena is a draw. It lies in a more compelling economic agenda and a more convincing national security one. John Kerry spoke a lot about jobs in this election, and he pledged to protect popular government programs like Social Security. But, beyond his admirable health care plan, he offered no bold ideas for reducing the economic insecurity that terrifies so many working-class, middle-class, and even upper-middle-class Americans (see Jacob S. Hacker, "False Positive," August 16 & 23). It is true that Kerry failed to win back many lunchpail, working-class former Democrats. But, instead of focusing merely on why those voters were alienated by the Democrats' cultural message, party strategists need to pay more attention to why they weren't attracted by its economic message.

In foreign policy, the work is even more urgent. Kerry found his voice in mid-September with effective critiques of Bush's Iraq policy. But that is all they were: critiques. He devoted very little time to articulating his own vision of how to fight the war on terrorism. The belief that Kerry would match Bush on national security simply by citing his Vietnam service was a textbook case of Democratic incoherence and condescension. Kerry's war record said nothing about how he would fight al Qaeda, and, to the Democrats' surprise, voters were smart enough to recognize that almost immediately.

Instead, voters took solace in Bush's clear sense of direction -- even when they felt he made mistakes -- and Kerry never provided a competing framework. He rarely spoke about his vision for bringing freedom to the Muslim world, thus ceding this terrain to Bush, who has done little in office to back up his rhetoric. The only principle Kerry talked about consistently was multilateralism -- more a method of achieving foreign policy goals than a goal itself. For all his vaunted intellectualism, Kerry tried to project strength in the war on terrorism without projecting ideas, and, as a result, he gave culturally conservative voters yet another reason to vote against him.

The Democratic Party has been in the wilderness before. And it has returned to transform the country. Today's despair is so great it sometimes clouds out intelligent thought. And the fear of political oblivion can produce moral lapses. The challenge is to move from despair to strategy. And win the country back.

Peter Beinart is the editor of TNR.

Culling the Herd--Maybe Time To Give Dan Rather and Mary Mapes Ceremonial Knives

NEW YORK - A 25-year-old man from Georgia who was apparently distraught over President Bush's re-election shot and killed himself at ground zero. Andrew Veal's body was found Saturday morning inside the off-limits site, said Steve Coleman, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. A shotgun was found nearby, but no suicide note was found, Coleman said.
